- As an African American, I found your article "The Jackson
- Problem" (NATION, Dec. 12) very sobering. It dispelled any
- illusions I had of black people finally being taken seriously
- by the media and politicians. Why is Jesse Jackson viewed as a
- difficulty? Why are strategies being formulated to make him go
- away? Why did you not berate these tacticians for their
- insensitivity? I realize the white majority is tired of hearing
- our complaints of the existence of racism. But the '80s have
- taught us that this group cannot be trusted to monitor itself.
